Lord Oxburgh of Liverpool has had a varied career as an academic, a civil servant and in business. At different times he was a Professor in Cambridge, Chief Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence and Chairman of Shell Transport and Trading. Today he sits as an independent in the House of Lords with particular interests in energy and environment. Several years ago he underwent an operation for spinal decompression and comments that without it he would today have been in a wheelchair rather than continuing to exercise his passion for mountaineering.
